Syarif Mbuinga Absorbs Aspirations of Inmates, Encourages Strengthening of Rehabilitation Programs at Pohuwato Prison

Gorontalo, dpd.go.id – A member of the House of Regional Representative of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) representing the Gorontalo Province electoral district, H. Syarif Mbuinga, M.M., conducted a working visit to the Class IIB Pohuwato Correctional Facility (Lapas) on Wednesday (22/7/2026). The visit was carried out as part of the DPD RI's supervisory function by absorbing the aspirations of around 200 inmates, as well as reviewing the implementation of rehabilitation programs, the fulfillment of inmates' rights, and the condition of correctional services in the region.

During the visit, Syarif Mbuinga was accompanied by the Head of the Class IIB Pohuwato Correctional Facility, Fahmi Reza Suratman, and his staff. The meeting took place through an open dialogue with the inmates to directly hear various inputs regarding personal and skill development programs, the granting of remissions in accordance with regulations, and the supporting facilities and infrastructure for the rehabilitation process.

Syarif Mbuinga emphasized that correctional facilities play a strategic role in shaping inmates so they can resume their social roles after serving their sentences.

"Corrections is not just about serving a sentence, but about how the state can guide inmates to build character, skills, and readiness to rejoin society. Therefore, the quality of rehabilitation must continue to be improved," said Syarif Mbuinga.

He explained that the visit was also part of DPD RI's efforts to gain a clear picture of how correctional policies are implemented in the regions, including the various challenges faced in providing services to inmates.

"Feedback from inmates and prison staff will serve as material for DPD RI in exercising its supervisory function and providing considerations to the government. We hope that rehabilitation programs, the proper granting of inmates' rights, and the provision of facilities can continue to be strengthened to support successful social reintegration," he added.

Meanwhile, the Head of Class IIB Pohuwato Lapas, Fahmi Reza Suratman, expressed his appreciation for DPD RI's attention to the management of correctional facilities in Pohuwato Regency. According to him, support from various parties is vital to improving the quality of rehabilitation focused on character building and self-reliance for inmates.

"This visit motivates us to keep enhancing our services and rehabilitation programs. Synergy with various stakeholders is crucial so that the rehabilitation process can run more optimally and benefit the inmates," said Fahmi Reza Suratman.

Through this working visit, Syarif Mbuinga hopes that coordination among the DPD RI, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, and local governments will continue to be strengthened to support a correctional system that is humane, professional, and oriented toward rehabilitation.
