Sinabung Erupts, DPD RI Speaker Sultan Requests Accelerated Evacuation of Affected Communities

dpd.go.id - The Speaker of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI), Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, has urged the regional government to expedite the evacuation process for residents affected by the eruption of Mount Sinabung. He believes speedy evacuations are necessary to reduce the number of casualties caused by eruption material.

The former Deputy Governor of Bengkulu stated that evacuating affected communities would require adequate resources. Therefore, the government needs to strengthen the role of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) with adequate budgetary allocations.

"The regional government, together with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), needs to evacuate residents in affected areas as soon as possible. We also encourage regional governments to coordinate with all parties, especially the central government," he stressed.

He assessed that the victims affected by the eruption needed a lot of logistical assistance, including food, medicine, masks, and temporary housing, which must be prepared by the BPBD.

"The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is the party most expected to play a role in the evacuation process for people affected by the eruption. We appreciate and extend our moral support to the BPBD officers who continue to work hard in the field," he stressed.

Mount Sinabung in Ndokum Siroga Village, Simpang Empat District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra, erupted on Monday (August 31) at 10:17 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), spewing an ash column 3,500 meters above the summit. This was the first eruption since the volcano last erupted in 2022.
