Senator Ning Lia Istifhama Joins Residents in Celebrating Independence Day with Traditional Games in Jemur Wonosari

Surabaya, dpd.go.id – Laughter echoed through a neighborhood in Jemur Wonosari on Sunday morning (August 9, 2026), as dozens of residents gathered in a narrow alley decorated with red-and-white flags to celebrate the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day.

The atmosphere was especially lively as East Java Senator Lia Istifhama, popularly known as Ning Lia, stepped into the heart of the community and joined residents in the festivities. Rather than simply attending as a guest, Ning Lia became part of a local team and took part in the traditional Jarik Puting Beliung competition.

The game, which tests teamwork and balance, immediately sparked laughter and excitement. As participants spun the jarik cloth while trying to maintain their balance, cheers and applause filled the neighborhood, creating the warm and festive atmosphere that has long characterized community Independence Day celebrations.

For a moment, the distinction between public officials and residents seemed to disappear. Everyone joined in the spirit of togetherness.

“Competitions like this may be simple, but they carry a deeper meaning. They are not merely entertainment, but also a way for us to strengthen togetherness while preserving our cultural traditions,” Ning Lia said during the event.

For residents of RT 07/RW 05 in Jemur Wonosari, Ning Lia’s presence was more than symbolic. She laughed with them and experienced firsthand the challenge of maintaining balance in a game that relies heavily on teamwork.

Children ran around the neighborhood, mothers cheered enthusiastically, and fathers were equally spirited in supporting the participants. The neighborhood itself became a vibrant stage for warmth, camaraderie, and community spirit.

Ning Lia also emphasized the importance of preserving traditional activities amid the growing influence of the digital era. In her view, traditional games such as Jarik Puting Beliung teach values that cannot be replaced by smartphone screens: cooperation, social connection, and empathy.

“Children today need spaces like this. They should not only spend their time playing with gadgets, but also have opportunities to socialize and experience togetherness firsthand,” she said.

Chairman of RT 07/RW 05 Jemur Wonosari, Ramadhany, said the event was more than just an annual competition.

“This is an opportunity for residents to come together, strengthen our sense of community, and get to know one another better. This is what the spirit of independence is all about—togetherness,” he said.

He added that Ning Lia’s participation, including making a video with residents, made the celebration even more memorable.

“When Ning Lia is here, it’s always more fun. There are no barriers or distinctions. Everyone mixes together and becomes closer to the community,” Ramadhany said.

He said that amid the bustle of a major city like Surabaya, the small gathering in Jemur Wonosari serves as a reminder that independence is not celebrated only through formal ceremonies, but also through laughter, shared effort, and togetherness at the grassroots level.

“Ning Lia has an extraordinary spirit for keeping that sense of community alive, so that Indonesia continues to be warm, simple, and full of meaning,” he said.
