Yorrys Visits Mimika, Hears Concerns from Hundreds of Displaced People Fleeing Conflict in Puncak, Central Papua

Timika, dpd.go.id – Vice Speaker of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) and Chairperson of the Special Committee (Pansus) on Conflict and Security in Papua, Yorrys Raweyai, followed up on reports from Papuan communities regarding the conditions of people displaced by the ongoing security conflict in Puncak, Central Papua, during a visit on Sunday (August 2, 2026). During visits to three displacement sites, Yorrys heard the concerns and anxieties of hundreds of displaced people who have lost their jobs and livelihoods as a result of security conflicts in the areas where they previously lived. The displaced people came from the districts of Yugumuak, Oneri, Agandugume, and Lambewi, which are currently affected by conflict.

“They have lost their livelihoods and opportunities to farm and cultivate their land. Their children are also struggling to access proper education because the areas where they live are affected by conflict,” Yorrys said in Jakarta on Monday (August 3, 2026).

Yorrys also revealed that the displaced people hope to return to their respective communities. However, they feel that this remains difficult as long as the conflict continues. The increasing presence of non-organic security forces has also contributed to prolonged trauma and a persistent sense of insecurity among local communities.

In addition to carrying out his duties during the DPD RI recess period, the visit was also aimed at gathering information on issues to be addressed by the DPD RI Special Committee on Papua.

Yorrys said the DPD RI Special Committee would compile realities and facts gathered directly from the field as material for formulating the committee’s work and recommendations following the recess period.

During the visit, Yorrys provided cash assistance and basic food packages as a gesture of concern for communities who continue to live under difficult conditions at displacement sites.

The displaced people said that, since arriving at the displacement sites, they had never received assistance from either the central or local governments. This situation has made it increasingly difficult for them to meet their daily needs.

“While staying at the displacement sites, they have never received visits from either the central or local governments. They have not even received food or clothing assistance,” Yorrys added.

Yorrys assured the displaced communities that the DPD RI Special Committee would listen to and follow up on their aspirations and concerns as people affected by the conflict.

“We will not look at this issue solely from a security perspective. We also view the protection of civilians, the fulfillment of basic rights, and the restoration of social life as integral parts of resolving the conflict in Papua,” Yorrys concluded.

Communities need certainty that they can live in safety, access education and healthcare, and have opportunities to rebuild their lives. The state must be present to provide protection and fair solutions for all communities.

The DPD RI Special Committee on Papua is committed to promoting recommendations that address the root causes of the conflict by strengthening civilian protection, restoring basic services, addressing the needs of displaced people, ensuring fair law enforcement, and fostering constructive dialogue among all stakeholders.
