dpd.go.id Jakarta - Dr. Filep Wamafma, Chairperson of Committee III of The House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI), has highlighted the public outcry over alleged physical violence and sexual harassment experienced by national rock climbing athletes. Filep strongly condemned the case, as the number of victims who have come forward has now increased from eight to ten.

"These allegations of violence and sexual harassment are deeply concerning. This is especially true given that this occurred at the national training center, where our male and female athletes should be able to grow and develop freely and with dignity, focusing solely on achieving success," Filep said on Tuesday (3/3/2026).

According to the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI), the issue of the 10 athletes, both male and female, has received serious attention. In response, the West Papuan senator is pushing for stronger regulations on athlete protection and education to ensure a safe and supportive environment for athlete development.

"We, Committee III of DPD RI, which oversees Youth and Sports, strongly condemn this incident and support the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Indonesian Sports Committee (KONI), and the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI) in thoroughly investigating this case. What is clear is that we must jointly oversee the strengthening of regulations to protect athletes," he continued.

He then added that Law Number 11 of 2022 concerning Sports guarantees athletes' rights to security, safety, protection from violence/harassment, and welfare, including social security and legal assistance. These points must be translated and reinforced in the internal regulations of institutions and federations.

"Our athletes are assets and the hope of society, whose dignity and future must be protected. Not only the national training center, but all of this nation's athletes deserve to be guaranteed safety from all forms of violence and harassment," he stressed.

Furthermore, Filep urged that this matter be handled fairly and that the perpetrators be given strict sanctions. He emphasized the need to prevent such incidents from recurring in the same environment or in other sports.

"We, Committee III of DPD RI, support the Ministry of Youth and Sports' decisive investigative measures. Acts of violence and sexual harassment seriously undermine the spirit of sportsmanship and team unity. Athletes are the nation's hope and pride, and their honor must be protected," said Filep.

"These firm and immediate steps are crucial to uphold the dignity of the national training center and serve as a basis for evaluation to ensure an open, fair, and sporting environment in the national sports world," he added.
