Irman Gusman Fully Supports the West Sumatra Police Chief's Efforts to Eradicate Drugs and Various Crimes That Disturb the Community

Padang, dpd.go.id - Indonesian Senator from West Sumatra, Irman Gusman, stated that he fully supports the Sumatra Police Chief in eradicating narcotics and various crimes that disturb the community.

Irman conveyed this commitment after meeting and discussing with the Regional Police Chief regarding security issues, law enforcement, and the public's high expectations of the police on Thursday (23/7).

"The public's expectations of the West Sumatra Regional Police are very high. The Minangkabau people are also critical and actively submit complaints," said Irman.

It's known that the narcotics threat in West Sumatra requires serious attention. Throughout the first semester of 2026, the West Sumatra Regional Police and all its agencies uncovered 705 cases involving 916 perpetrators, and seized 41.66 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 586.3 kilograms of marijuana, and 593 ecstasy pills.

These data show that the eradication of narcotics does not stop at arresting perpetrators in the field.

The former two-term Speaker of the DPD RI appreciated the Regional Police Chief's seriousness in handling narcotics distribution, including instructions to all Police Chiefs to report and publish the results of case disclosures to the public.

According to Irman, the eradication of narcotics should not stop at arresting couriers.

The investigation must reach the dealers, financiers, network controllers, fund flows, and those who provide protection.

"We must not allow only couriers to be caught, while the controllers and financiers remain active. Enforcement must reach the root of the network," stressed the member of Committee I of the House of the Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI).

Irman also emphasized the importance of distinguishing between dealers and distributors and addicts and victims of drug abuse.

Addicts and victims of abuse who meet the requirements need to be directed to assessment and rehabilitation, while dealers and distribution networks must be dealt with firmly.

In addition to enforcement, the Padang Panjang-born Senator offered collaboration with the Regional Police through various outreach and prevention activities involving ninik mamak, religious scholars, bundo kanduang, community leaders, youth, schools, universities, village governments, the media, and community organizations.

"Community leaders and various stakeholders must be strategic partners with the police. They can play a role in education, environmental monitoring, early detection, and encouraging the public to report crimes," he said.

This collaboration can also be directed at preventing gambling, thuggery, violence, illegal mining, and various other crimes that disrupt public security.

The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the DPP IKM then hoped that the new leadership of the West Sumatra Regional Police would further strengthen public trust through professional, transparent, and community-friendly law enforcement.

"I fully support the Regional Police Chief's steps, and this must be a joint effort to protect the younger generation and eradicate drugs and various crimes that are disturbing the people of West Sumatra," concluded Irman Gusman.
