In Front of Members of The DPD RI, PLN Promised to Provide Electricity to 72 Unconnected Villages

Samarinda, dpd.go.id – Member of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) of East Kalimantan Province, Dr. Yulianus Henock Sumual, S.H., M.Si., held a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with PT PLN (Persero) Main Distribution Unit of East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan and the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office of East Kalimantan Province at the DPD RI Office of East Kalimantan Province, Monday (20/7/2026). This activity is part of the Recess Period of Session V of the 2025–2026 Session Year as well as the implementation of the supervisory function of Committee II of the DPD RI regarding the implementation of policies in the fields of electricity, energy, and mineral resources.

In his remarks, the Senator from East Kalimantan emphasized that the RDP is a means to absorb aspirations and obtain direct information regarding the condition of electricity provision in the region as material for implementing the DPD RI's supervisory function.

"This hearing is part of the DPD RI's oversight function to ensure that electricity services in East Kalimantan continue to improve. As we know, the public needs certainty about the availability of reliable electricity. Therefore, we encourage faster and more coordinated resolution of various obstacles, from system disruptions to the construction of electricity networks in remote areas. Equal access to electricity is part of equitable development. No community in remote areas, border areas, or remote areas should be left behind in obtaining electricity services," he emphasized.

In its presentation, PT PLN (Persero) UID East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan explained that the electricity system in East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan is currently supported by the Kalimantan interconnection system and several isolated electricity systems to serve remote areas. PLN also stated that the power outage that occurred in late June to early July 2026 was caused by technical problems in several generating units that occurred simultaneously in the Kalimantan interconnection system, not due to limited coal supply. Since July 8, 2026, the electricity system conditions have returned to normal and are operating reliably.

In addition to the interconnection system, there are still 26 isolated electricity systems that serve areas that are not yet connected to the interconnection network," he said.

PLN also outlined the progress of the Village Electrification Program in East Kalimantan Province. "Of the 108 previously un-electrified villages in East Kalimantan, 36 have been electrified, and 72 remaining un-electrified villages in East Kalimantan are PLN's priority in the national electrification program. We are targeting the gradual completion of all villages' electricity network development by 2027–2028," he added.

Meanwhile, the East Kalimantan Provincial ESDM Office expressed its commitment to continue strengthening synergy with PT PLN (Persero), district/city governments, and relevant ministries in accelerating the development of electricity infrastructure, increasing the electrification ratio, and expanding equitable access to electricity throughout East Kalimantan.

"The Provincial Government has authority in the electricity sector, which includes the formulation of regional policies, the establishment of the Provincial Electricity General Plan (RUKP), the development and supervision of electricity business entities under its authority, and the imposition of administrative sanctions in accordance with statutory provisions. In supporting the provision of electricity, the government, through the Minister and Governor, can provide funding for the construction of electricity networks for the underprivileged, undeveloped areas, remote and border areas, as well as rural electrification programs. The East Kalimantan Provincial Government has also implemented a program to expand the electricity distribution network," he concluded.

Concluding the meeting, Dr. Yulianus Henock Sumual emphasized the DPD RI's commitment to continue overseeing equitable access to electricity and resolving various obstacles to electricity infrastructure development in East Kalimantan. "The DPD RI, through Committee II, will continue to oversee various issues raised in this meeting, including accelerating village electrification, resolving licensing obstacles, and strengthening synergy between the Central Government, Regional Governments, and PT PLN (Persero). We hope that all people of East Kalimantan can enjoy reliable, equitable, and equitable electricity services," he concluded.
