Hundreds Face Clean Water Crisis, Senator Mirah Urges Swift Action from Bima Administration

dpd.go.id – Bima, June 25, 2026 – DPD RI member representing West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Mirah Midadan Fahmid, has called on the Bima Regency Government to take immediate and serious action to address the clean water crisis affecting residents of Bajo Village and several other villages across Bima.

"Based on the data and information we have gathered from local residents, this situation has persisted for quite some time and has directly affected the basic needs of hundreds of households that depend on access to clean water. This is not merely a disruption in public services, it concerns the fundamental rights of our citizens. We must act quickly," Senator Mirah said.

According to reports received from the community, the clean water shortage is currently affecting residents of Ndanondere Hamlet and Rasabou Hamlet in Bajo Village. A total of 153 households in Ndanondere and 146 households in Rasabou have been directly impacted.

With 299 households approximately 779 people affected in these two hamlets alone, Mirah stressed that the issue can no longer be treated as an ordinary problem but must become a priority for the local government. She noted that these figures do not yet include other areas in Bima that may also be experiencing limited access to clean water.

Senator Mirah emphasized that access to clean water is a fundamental right that the government is obligated to fulfill. She urged the local administration to implement concrete measures to ensure sustainable access to clean water for residents.

"Clean water is not just a daily necessity it is a basic human need that directly determines people's quality of life. When hundreds of residents struggle to obtain clean water, the government must step in immediately and provide real solutions," she said.

According to information obtained from local residents, one of the primary causes of the disruption is the frequent breakdown of water pumping equipment. Inadequate maintenance and insufficient attention to water supply infrastructure have resulted in unreliable clean water services.

The situation is particularly critical because Bima Regency's drinking water access remains heavily dependent on pumping infrastructure. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data show that in 2024, 58.86 percent of households in Bima Regency relied on boreholes or pumped wells as their primary source of drinking water, while only 0.42 percent had access to piped water. As a result, when pumping systems fail, the impact is immediately felt by a large number of families.

Mirah said the situation underscores the need for a comprehensive evaluation of clean water infrastructure management in the region. She argued that the local government must go beyond repairing damaged facilities by establishing a sustainable maintenance system to prevent recurring problems.

"We cannot continue responding only after equipment breaks down. What the community needs is a system that guarantees reliable clean water services over the long term. Regular maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and adequate budget allocations must become top priorities," she stressed.

In addition to repairing existing facilities, Mirah encouraged the Bima Regency Government to conduct a comprehensive assessment of clean water needs in drought-prone areas and regions vulnerable to water supply disruptions. Such mapping, she said, is essential to ensure that government policies are aligned with conditions on the ground.

She also urged the relevant agencies to immediately inspect Bajo Village to assess the condition of the existing infrastructure and formulate an accelerated response plan. The longer the problem remains unresolved, she warned, the greater the social and economic burden on local communities.

"As many as 779 residents in Bajo Village are waiting for the government's response. Other areas across Bima must also be mapped promptly to prevent similar problems from spreading. Communities should not have to struggle on their own to secure their basic rights. I hope the local government will take swift, well-planned, and sustainable action to resolve the clean water crisis affecting these residents," Mirah concluded.
