Jakarta, dpd.go.id – As part of the oversight function regarding the implementation of national health policies, dr. Ratu, a Senator representing the Province of South Sumatra, raised concerns regarding the rise in measles cases during a Working Meeting with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (April 13, 2026).
During the session between Committee III of the The House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia(DPD RI) and the Ministry of Health, dr. Ratu highlighted the emergence of measles Extraordinary Occurrences (KLB) in several regions across Indonesia. She noted that these outbreaks indicate that disease control which has long relied on immunization programs is not yet functioning optimally on the ground.
She emphasized that measles is a medically preventable disease through vaccination. Therefore, the resurgence of cases serves as a critical indicator of issues within public immunization coverage that require immediate and serious attention. dr. Ratu assessed that the widespread dissemination of false or misleading information regarding immunizations and vaccines is a primary factor influencing the current situation, especially given today’s massive flow of information.
"The spread of hoaxes and non-scientific information has gradually shifted public perception and eroded trust in vaccination programs. Ultimately, this leads to suboptimal immunization coverage in various regions."
This condition prevents the achievement of maximum herd immunity, thereby reopening the door for measles outbreaks that should have been preventable.
During the meeting, dr. Ratu also expressed deep concern over the serious impact of the disease, which affects not only the general public but also healthcare workers on the front lines. She specifically highlighted cases where medical personnel have passed away after contracting measles while performing their duties.
According to her, this situation serves as a "serious alarm" for all stakeholders. Healthcare workers, who should be protected, have become among the most vulnerable. She asserted that the state must step in to provide maximum protection through strengthening prevention systems, ensuring occupational safety guarantees, implementing policy support to ensure healthcare professionals can serve the community safely.
