DPD RI Committee II Urges for Stronger Nuclear Energy Utilization to Bolster National Energy Security

BANDUNG, dpd.go.id – Committee II of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) conducted an oversight review on the implementation of Law Number 10 of 1997 concerning Nuclear Energy. The review was carried out through a discussion forum with the West Java Provincial Government and relevant stakeholders at the BRIN Office in Bandung.

Alfiansyah Komeng, a member of Committee II of the DPD RI representing West Java, emphasized that West Java possesses vast potential for nuclear energy development. "West Java, particularly Bandung, has human resources that are ready to manage nuclear technology, backed by the support of BRIN and premier universities like ITB," he stated.

A representative from the state electricity company, PT PLN (Persero), explained that nuclear energy serves as a strategic option to achieve energy self-sufficiency. "Nuclear energy can address the energy trilemma by successfully balancing security, affordability, and sustainability," they explained.

The Head of the Research Center for Nuclear Safety, Metrology, and Quality Technology at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Heru Prasetio, noted that Indonesia already operates three research nuclear reactors located in Serpong, Yogyakarta, and Bandung. These facilities are utilized for research, education, industry, as well as the production of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals. He also stressed the need for regulatory improvements. "The government needs to conduct an in-depth review so that the private sector can play an active role in nuclear management," he said.

Meanwhile, the West Java Provincial Government highlighted the critical importance of involving local governments in implementing nuclear energy policies. "We do not see a defined role for local governments in the current Nuclear Energy Law. This is an area that needs to be explored," said Arief Dhany Sutadian, Head of the Innovation and Technology Division at the West Java Provincial Research and Development Agency (BP2D).

A representative from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) noted that nuclear energy remains a viable alternative to safeguard national energy security. "Nuclear energy has become one of the energy sources under serious consideration to guarantee the sustainability of the national energy supply," they explained.

Academics from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) also weighed in, stating that a revision of the Nuclear Energy Law is necessary to keep pace with technological advancements, strengthen national research, guarantee nuclear safety, and support the development of domestic technology.

As part of the official visit, the DPD RI Committee II delegation toured the TRIGA 2000 Research Nuclear Reactor at BRIN Bandung to gain firsthand insight into the development of research reactor technology in Indonesia.

This working visit underscores the commitment of Committee II of the DPD RI to overseeing the development of nuclear energy as a form of new energy. This initiative aims to support national energy security, accelerate the transition toward clean energy, and drive sustainable development.*
