Sultan Distributes Hundreds of Holiday Allowances to Blind People in Jakarta, Says Economic Empowerment Efforts Needed

dpd.go.id - Speaker of the House of the Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, said that the government needs to continue to pay serious attention to economic empowerment for people with disabilities who generally live below the poverty line.

According to Sultan, this is part of the constitutional mandate, which requires the state to protect the poor.

"We need to thank the government for its attention to our brothers and sisters with disabilities through social assistance programs. However, perhaps the form and method have not been economically empowering," said Sultan while delivering a speech at the Alms Bringing Blessings event with hundreds of blind people from Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) on Sunday at the Pondok Indah Mosque in Jakarta.

The senator from Bengkulu revealed that Indonesia has Law No. 8 of 2016 concerning Persons with Disabilities as the main legal umbrella that guarantees the rights, equality, and protection of people with disabilities from discrimination.

"This law covers 22 basic rights, including education, employment (2% private sector/1% state-owned enterprise/government sector), health, and accessibility to public facilities, to create independence for all of you," he stressed.

Sultan said DPD RI continues to encourage the government and all related parties to continue to increase attention to brothers and sisters with disabilities, especially the blind, through an economic empowerment approach.

"I strongly believe that despite physical limitations, every human being has their own potential and strengths that need to be developed," he concluded.

Furthermore, Sultan expressed his appreciation to donors such as philanthropist businessman Muhammad Fitno and friends.

"Not many rich people pay attention to the Blind community, except for those who are given guidance and blessings in their sustenance by Allah SWT," he concluded.
