Concerned about the KM Nurul Salsa Tragedy, the Speaker of DPD RI Urged Strengthening Connectivity in the Island Regions

Jakarta, dpd.go.id – Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, Speaker of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI), expressed his deepest condolences for the sinking of the KM Nurul Salsa in Selayar waters. He hoped that all the victims who died would find peace with God Almighty and that their families would be given strength.

According to the Sultan, the incident serves as a reminder that maritime transportation connectivity and safety issues in the archipelagic region still require serious government attention. As the world's largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia must be able to provide safe, adequate, and easily accessible transportation services to the public.

"We are certainly deeply concerned by this incident. This tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for the nation to strengthen inter-island connectivity and improve the quality of maritime transportation services for people in the archipelago," Sultan said in an official statement on Wednesday (July 22).

Sultan emphasized that this incident should not be viewed as a mere disaster, but also as a momentum to strengthen development policies that favor the island region.

"Therefore, since the beginning of our leadership, the DPD RI has continuously championed the deliberation of the Draft Law on Archipelagic Regions. This regulation is crucial for ensuring that communities in archipelagic regions receive policy affirmation, particularly in the development of connectivity, public services, and equitable distribution of prosperity," he stressed.

Furthermore, Sultan commended the hard work of the SAR team, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the local government, and all parties involved in the search and rescue operation. He expressed his hope that coordination among all elements would continue to be strengthened so that all victims still listed as missing could be found soon.

"We appreciate the dedication of the entire team who continue to work tirelessly in the search and rescue process. We hope all victims still being searched for will be found soon. We certainly hope that a tragedy like this will not happen again through strengthening shipping safety, supervision, and the development of better maritime transportation infrastructure," Sultan concluded.
