dpd.go.id JAKARTA – Member of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) and MPR RI for the DKI Jakarta Electoral District, Achmad Azran, called for the importance of creating a ceasefire in the conflict in the Middle East before and during the implementation of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
According to him, the Hajj pilgrimage is one of the pillars of Islam, and is annually attended by more than 2 million Muslims from various countries. Given its global scale, regional security stability, particularly in the Middle East, is a crucial factor in ensuring the smooth and safe implementation of the pilgrimage.
"The implementation of the Hajj is not only a religious activity, but also a global event involving millions of Muslims. Therefore, it is appropriate for all parties, especially countries in conflict, to respect this sacred momentum," said the man who is usually called Bang Azran.
This Betawi native believes that the Hajj season could be a strategic opportunity to initiate a peace process, at least through a temporary ceasefire. This step is considered crucial to provide space for security stabilization and recovery in the region.
Beyond security aspects, Achmad Azran also highlighted the global economic impact of the prolonged conflict. Rising energy prices, particularly fuel oil, which has fluctuated significantly on the international market in recent months, have the potential to increase the overall cost of the Hajj pilgrimage. This situation will undoubtedly have a direct impact on the financial burden borne by prospective pilgrims.
"Geopolitical instability has driven up global logistics and transportation costs. If the conflict isn't resolved soon, the cost of organizing the Hajj pilgrimage could potentially increase and burden pilgrims," he explained.
He further urged Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim country, to take a more active role in international diplomatic efforts. Indonesia is considered to have the strategic position and moral legitimacy to participate in efforts to promote a ceasefire.
"Indonesia has diplomatic capacity and a strong international standing. I hope the government can play an active role in promoting dialogue and being part of a peaceful solution," he added.
The father of four children and three grandchildren also hopes that through the collective efforts of the international community, especially countries with global influence, this year's Hajj pilgrimage can take place safely, smoothly, and with full devotion.
"Hopefully, this year's Hajj can be a starting point for peace and provide a sense of security and comfort for all pilgrims as they perform their pilgrimage," he concluded.(*)
