Jakarta, dpd.go.id – Speaker of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI), Sultan Baktiar Najamudin, expressed deep concern and heartfelt condolences to the victims and all communities affected by the earthquake in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The former Vice Governor of Bengkulu requested the Government to provide fiscal support to the relevant local governments so that response efforts for the disaster victims can be carried out optimally.

“It should be noted that this earthquake disaster is still ongoing, though at a smaller scale than before. This has prompted BMKG (the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency) and local governments to urge the public to increase vigilance and follow safety directives,” Sultan said in an official statement on Sunday (Aug 16).

Sultan appreciated the prompt and precise steps taken by the Central Government and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNBNP) in conducting evacuations and logging the number of casualties as well as real-time damage to infrastructure and buildings.

“With relatively narrow fiscal space, local governments certainly require additional budget support to accelerate the recovery of public facilities and meet the needs of residents at evacuation sites,” Sultan explained.

According to Sultan, DPD RI continues to coordinate intensively with DPD RI members from NTT who are currently directly inspecting conditions in the affected areas. He hopes the Central Government and Local Governments will maintain coordination to prepare rehabilitation and reconstruction measures more rapidly.

“Currently, four DPD RI members from NTT are coordinating and directly inspecting conditions in the northern part of Flores. As usual, DPD RI as an institution will provide disaster assistance to affected communities,” he concluded.
