Yogyakarta, dpd.go.id - Speaker of the House of the Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) Sultan Baktiar Najamudin visited Gajah Mada University (UGM) on Tuesday, April 21. During the visit, the Sultan was welcomed directly by UGM Chancellor Prof. Ova Emilia at the rectorate building.
The former Deputy Governor of Bengkulu, along with Senator Ahmad Sauqi, former Senator Dr. Rahmat Syah and the Chancellor of UGM, inaugurated the Ndalem Widya Asih Senior Sharing Space, a gathering place for senior UGM alumni when visiting the campus.
In his statement to the media, the Senator from Bengkulu stated that UGM has a reputation as a world-class, innovative university grounded in the noble values of the Indonesian nation. "Thanks to UGM's commitment and consistency in developing a civilized higher education ecosystem across various aspects of national life, many of its alumni have successfully served at the national level, both in legislative, executive, and judicial institutions," Sultan said.
According to him, UGM is a symbol of progress in human resource development based on Indonesian national values. "We must acknowledge that the ideas and dedication of UGM alumni have long influenced the direction of National Development policy," he emphasized.
In addition, the 6th Speaker of the DPD RI was also known to deliver a public lecture at the Hall of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) UGM. In front of hundreds of Fisipol UGM students, Sultan, who had just received his HC Doctorate from the Korean Maritime and Ocean University, emphasized that the direction of sustainable national development policies is highly determined by the political situation and democratic atmosphere. "As a democratic institution that represents the region, the DPD RI in this period is not only making serious efforts to maintain democratic stability, but also ensuring the stability of ecological resilience in the region," said the author of the book Green Democracy.
Sultan encouraged UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences students to continue developing themselves into democratic, critical, and civilized national cadres. "Critical thinking is a luxury for students who are scientific and objective. However, freedom of expression in Indonesia's Pancasila democracy must prioritize the principles of public order and objectivity," he concluded.
