dpd.go.id – Member of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI), Dr. Hilmy Muhammad, M.A., asserted that the discourse regarding granting free access to United States military aircraft into Indonesian territory contradicts the fundamental principles of Indonesia's foreign policy.
"Indonesia stands upon a constitutional mandate to participate in maintaining world order based on independence, eternal peace, and social justice. Therefore, Indonesia must not provide space, routes, or facilities for the military forces of any country involved in aggression and colonization," the member of Committee II of the DPD RI stated in a written release on Tuesday (14/4/26).
According to Gus Hilmy, as he is colloquially known, although the Indonesian Ministry of Defense has stated that discussions are not yet final, the public retains the right to express opposition from the outset. He argued that this issue concerns the direction of Indonesia's foreign policy and the nation's moral standing amidst global conflicts.
"We have the right to speak up; we have the right to refuse! How is it possible for us to grant passage to a party that, in many conflicts, actually appears as a supporter of aggression? Indonesia must not shift from being a nation that defends the independence of nations to one that facilitates the movements of aggressors. To befriend an aggressor is to share the moral responsibility for that aggression," he added.
