Jakarta, dpd.go.id – Agita Nurfianti, a member of Committee III of the House of Regional Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPD RI) representing West Java Province, highlighted the widespread sale of alcoholic beverages through e-commerce platforms. This was discussed during a Working Meeting between DPD RI Committee III and the Ministry of Trade regarding the Consumer Protection Bill on Tuesday (7/4) at the DPD RI Office in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

During the meeting, Agita emphasized the importance of strengthening regulations and oversight regarding the distribution of alcohol, particularly on digital channels which are increasingly difficult to control. Based on her monitoring, many alcoholic beverages are still circulating on e-commerce platforms.

"Sales on e-commerce are incredibly vast; almost all goods are available, including alcoholic beverages. My concern is the mechanism for supervision and restriction, considering that alcohol may only be purchased by those aged 21 and over," said Agita.

She assessed that online purchasing systems have the potential for misuse, primarily due to loopholes in buyer identity verification. According to her, using someone else's identity in digital transactions is highly possible, creating access opportunities for children and teenagers.

"Online purchases can be manipulated for example, by using someone else's identity. This certainly poses a risk to consumer protection, especially in preventing the spread of alcohol to children, teenagers, and school-aged youth," she asserted.

Furthermore, Agita highlighted the need for stricter supervision not only on digital platforms but also in offline distribution. She revealed that the illegal circulation of alcohol is still frequently found in stalls and kiosks that sell them covertly.

"Enforcement actions like raids have indeed been carried out, but the fact is they keep popping up. This indicates a need for a more systematic and sustainable approach to break the distribution chain of illegal alcohol," she added.

Responding to these concerns, the Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, emphasized that the sale of alcoholic beverages through e-commerce is not permitted under current regulations.

"Regarding the sale of alcohol, Ma'am, it is not allowed to be sold online. If you have information (regarding online sales), please report it to us; we can shut down the company. So, we have regulations stating it is not allowed; it cannot be sold through e-commerce," stated Budi Santoso.

Through the discussion of the Consumer Protection Bill, Agita hopes the government can strengthen regulations and oversight systems in both digital and conventional realms to ensure the protection of the public especially the younger generation from the negative impacts of uncontrolled alcohol distribution.
